Requires macOS 13 or later · AI features require macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence

The Problem

You always end up opening three apps just to write one document

Your Markdown editor doesn't understand code. Your code editor doesn't handle PDFs. Your writing tool can't commit to Git. So you context-switch constantly — editor, terminal, Preview, browser — for every document you ship.

macOS has every framework needed to do this right: TextKit 2, Foundation Models, libgit2. Nobody assembled them into a single native app. Paperforge does.

Your Markdown editor doesn't understand code. Your code editor doesn't handle PDFs. Your writing tool can't commit to Git. So you context-switch constantly — editor, terminal, Preview, browser — for every document you ship.

Write in Any Format

Open anything: Markdown, plain text, Swift, Python, TypeScript, JSON, YAML, TOML, HTML, SQL, shell scripts, and more. Paperforge picks the right mode automatically. Rich text and Word documents open as formatted text. PDFs open directly for reading and annotation.

  • Markdown live syntax highlighting — headings, bold, italic, code, links, blockquotes
  • Code highlighting for 20+ file types with automatic language detection
  • Rich text support — RTF, RTFD, DOCX open as formatted text
  • PDF reading and annotation — no context switching to Preview

Paperforge on-device AI draft generation

AI Draft Generation — On Device

Describe what you need, and Paperforge generates a complete document draft using Apple's on-device language model. No data leaves your Mac. No API key required. Works on macOS 26 and later with Apple Intelligence enabled.

  • Choose document type — blog post, README, technical doc, meeting notes, email, essay
  • Pick tone, length, and output format — Markdown, plain text, or HTML
  • Review the draft, tweak the prompt, drop it straight into your document
  • Zero data leaves your Mac — processed entirely on-device

Git — Without Leaving the Editor

Stage files, write commit messages, and push — all from the integrated Git sidebar. See which files have changed, review diffs inline, and manage branches without switching to Terminal. The inspector panel shows commit history and diff statistics for the active file.

  • Stage files and write commit messages from the sidebar
  • Push and pull directly from the editor
  • Review diffs inline — no Terminal needed
  • Commit history and diff statistics in the Inspector panel

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Paperforge really native — no Electron?

Yes. Paperforge is built in Swift and SwiftUI with real AppKit components — NSTextView, NSScrollView, native toolbar and menus. It has no Electron, no web engine, no Chromium. It behaves like the macOS app it is.

Is Paperforge free?

Yes. Paperforge is free to download and use with no subscription and no in-app purchases. All features are included at no cost.

Do AI features require an internet connection?

No. All AI features — draft generation and writing tools — run entirely on your Mac using Apple's Foundation Models framework. No data is sent to any server. No API key is required. AI features require macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence enabled.

Does Git integration require anything installed?

Yes. Git features require a local Git installation on your Mac. You can install Git via Xcode Command Line Tools (xcode-select --install) or Homebrew (brew install git). The app integrates with whichever Git binary is on your PATH.

Can I open Word and RTF documents?

Yes. Rich text files (RTF, RTFD) and Word documents (DOCX) open as formatted text in Paperforge. You can read and edit them alongside your Markdown and code files in the same tabbed window.

What happens to my work if the app crashes?

Paperforge saves a local recovery copy of every unsaved document automatically. If the app quits unexpectedly, your work is recovered the next time you launch. Recovery data is stored only on your Mac and deleted once you save or discard the document.
